Many inverters use a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery because it doesn’t get hot as much, and has a longer lifespan than lead-acid or standard lithium-ion batteries.
It recharges fast and also discharges energy fast without damaging the cells.
However, before you get a LiFePO4 battery for your solar inverter, you should look beyond amp-hours at the battery-management system (BMS), inverter communication, charging during cold weather, etc.
The lithium cells are not the only component to consider, consider the firmware, BMS, thermal protection, communication protocol, and manufacturer’s willingness to offer support.
Here are top LiFePO4 battery models for solar energy storage.
EG4 LL-S 48V 100Ah
The EG4 LL-S is the ideal model for a serious 48V architecture for residential or off-grid power usage.
It can store 5.12 kWh of energy at 51.2 voltage. It uses a server-rack format, with CAN/RS485 communications, and UL 1973 listing and compatibility with major solar inverters.
The manufacturer specified that it has 6,000 deep cycles and can be expanded to up to 64 batteries.
Their technical support and firmware experience is fair enough. Most users don’t have any problem with it in the first years of use.
I will also consider EG4 LL-S because of its strong price-to-kWh ratio, which is rare in the market.
SOK 12V 206Ah
SOK is another fantastic battery, especially the 12V 206Ah model which provides 2.64 kWh, and is serviceable.
It has a metal enclosure, and good lifespan. It provides 150A continuous discharge, and Bluetooth monitoring.
You can use SOK 206Ah battery to run a 12V solar system with 800 watts of solar and daily EV charging.
You also get technical support and a replacement module if the battery management system malfunctions or any component gets damaged.
The downside of this battery is the weight, and the price, which is more expensive than an average 12V LiFePO4 battery.
LiTime battery
LiTime offers more value when your budget is tight.
LiTime 12V 100Ah battery provides 1.28 kWh, a 100A BMS, IP65 protection, 4,000 cycles and series/parallel expansion.
You can run the batteries consistently for a couple of years without experiencing any issue.
The BMS is good, and you also get technical support if there is an issue with it.
I will go for it when cost per kWh matters, and also consider its good capacity, and light weight, but for premium user support, I will consider other options.
Battle Born
Battle Born develops modern LiFePO4 batteries that are well engineered. The 100Ah battery capacity has 100A maximum discharge, 3,000-5,000 cycles and a solid internal BMS.
This battery efficiency is also good, with many users reporting that it’s still performing well after years of use.
It is commonly used in RV, marine and off-grid communities.
It offers good value, but at the expense of high cost.
It offers warranty and user support which is quite good, but many people complain of the high shipping cost, which negates this added advantage.
Victron Lithium SuperPack NG
Victron’s new Lithium SuperPack NG range is different from the bargain-oriented batteries because it is designed as part of a broader Victron ecosystem.
The 12.8V/200Ah variant provides 2.56 kWh, Bluetooth monitoring, integrated BMS and self-heating, while it also has 25.6V and 51.2V versions.
It provides 2,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge and up to 5,000 cycles at 50% depth of discharge.
It is most suitable for use with the Victron solar system so the battery’s communication and monitoring become easier and faster.
This product is a bit pricey, and doesn’t make much sense if the rest of your system is not within the Victron ecosystem.
